Dageki-waza 打撃技 — Striking techniques

Dageki-waza covers the striking side of karate.

Punches, elbows, knees, forearms, open-hand strikes and kicks all sit within this idea. The point is not just impact — it is structure, target, timing and intent.

A strike without control is just movement. A strike with purpose becomes karate.

Uke-waza 受け技 — Blocking techniques

Uke-waza is often translated as blocking, but that barely scratches the surface.

These receiving techniques can deflect, cover, redirect, trap, check, control or set up a counterattack. A good uke is active, not passive.

Do not just block the attack. Take the line, take the angle, take the moment.

Kihon 基本 — Basics

Kihon is the foundation everything else stands on.

The basics build posture, balance, hip movement, breathing, coordination and power. Punches, kicks, blocks and stances may look simple, but they expose every weakness in movement.

No solid basics. No real karate.

GYAKU TSUKI (REVERSE PUNCH)

One of the most recognisable techniques in karate - but far more than just a punch.

Gyaku Tsuki teaches the fundamentals of effective striking:
• Driving power from the floor
• Hip rotation and body connection
• Hikite (pulling hand)
• Correct stance and balance
• Timing, distance and precision

When performed correctly, the whole body moves as one unit. The punch is simply the final expression of power generated from the ground up.

Practice slowly. Focus on structure. Build speed only after developing control.

A strong Gyaku Tsuki isn’t about muscle - it’s about mechanics.

Train the basics. Master the fundamentals.
